Buying the uq and tq

New to this stuff ,but I have been learning a lot. Watched most of Shug,s utubes and others. Shug is a very talented man and must have polar bear blood in his veins.

Anyway thinking about ordering a uq and tq before I buy anything else. These two items seen to cost the most. Need to get the big expense first? Everybody says I swim upstream and backwards.They may be right .

Ya, you can't really use those items without a hammock.

Buying as I go here, no real hurry . Trying to buy some good stuff. Hammock seems to be the least expense. But ,I will get it all together soon ,I hope .

While searching for my first hammock, I stumbled upon bridge hammocks. It was the right choice for me. I originally thought gathered end was my only option. If I purchased the UQ first, I would be shopping for a second it fit my Warbonnet Ridge Runner. TQs our more universal. If there is no hurry, save the money you need than purchase all at the same time. Just a thought.

SkraM makes a good point. My best advice for new hangers is to try and make it to a group hang. Hammock people are awesome and you will get to see (and usually test) lots of great hammocks, quilts, and tarps. It could help you decide the direction you want to go. I've tried a bridge, but I love the cradled feeling I get in the gathered end hammock. Good luck with whatever you decide. Have fun.

My suggestion would be to get a hammock and a sleep pad, see if you actually like hanging, and proceed accordingly. Figure out the hammock thing in warm weather,then make the big step into winter hanging.

An UQ and TQ set for Northern MN in winter will be quite different that what is necessary in SC.

I disagree. I've been using my recently acquired UGQ all the time as a throw when movie watching. I'd also definitely use it if I needed to use my tent, in place of using a sleeping bag.

We just had a group hang last weekend. Our next big hang will be Spring Swing 2014 at Huntington Beach State Park, March 28-30. If you are on FB, find our group page link in my signature. I had your same line of thinking - going with a top quilt before even getting a hammock. I haven't gotten an underquilt yet but will probably do so in the fall after I have my hammock. For now I can use my topquilt in the tent until I get my hammock in April (birthday).

I scoured the internet looking at all the quilt companies and e-mailing questions. I narrowed it down to the two companies that had the most prompt responses to my e-mails and reputations for quality quilts. I wound up going with an 40* UnderGround Quilt with extra fill, which is currently "in production". The other company was enLightened equipment but went with UGQ because I was able to get 850 Goose Down for just a little extra than the duck down at EE.

If you already have a tent, get the quilts and you can use them tent camping or, like someone else said, as a throw in your home.

I got a Winter Yeti UQ. It is designed for a gathered-end hammock. I use it with my homemade bridge hammock. All I did was to change out the elastic UQ suspension from a loop with an attachment on each end to two cords with loops on each end. Two point attachment to four point attachment. It was simple.

It works very well.
