Also, starting at Wolf Rock and heading north through Gooseberry and Split Rock State park is an awesome walk too.

    Have fun,

Yeah...just don't camp in the Gooseberry campground. Wasn't what I'd call hammock friendly as far as trees & distances were concerned. That and all those camp sites are ridiculously packed in close together.

Last fall my wife and I did 5 day on the SHT. My wife wanted to stay around 6 miles a day so this is the route we did.
On Sunday we parked at the Finland Rec Center and took the shuttle to Temperance River. We hiked about 6 miles and stayed at Fredenburg Creek site. Nice site good trees to hang from. Next day we went to Caribou River group site, this was about 10 miles but it is a very easy section to hike. Day three we went to Crosby Manitou and stayed at a site on Bensen Lake. This was the roughest section, nice views but lots of up and downs. Day four we went to South Egge Lake site, we had planned on the South Sonju but it was occupied by Boy Scouts. So we went on and really liked Egge. Day five was a short three miles back to the car. Total was 38 miles and we really enjoyed it.

What time in the fall did you go? We are planning to go mid September and I'm going to assume the weather will be similar to Northern Lower Penninsula of Michigan. Anywhere from 30 to 70 degrees.

We went the last weekend of Sept fist of October. Peak colors are about that time. Weather is a little colder might want to expect some 20's. But nothing is better than the colors at that time of year.

I would go from Finland Rec Center to Silver Bay. Great ups and downs with some of the best views on the whole trail. Tallest water fall in the state in tettegouche state park. Plus bean and bear lake overlook is unbeatable for a water break. It might be a little over 40 miles but the trail is phenomenal through that section.

Is getting water much of an issue on any section of the trail? The guide book says that many campsites are near water but how about the trail sections themselves?

There can be some drier sections in the Fall….the little creeks may be dry. But all in all the rivers and lakes are good and flowing. Also depends on the year.
