I have sewn a zipper on the ends of my tarp so I can zip from the bottom up to enclose the ends, with the middle tied out it looks a little like a upside down rowboat and it works at keeping driven rain at bay. It weighs less than beaks, all while they eat up very little of my pack volume, also I cant loose or forget them.
A.T. 61 days and counting down
Whether trail or paddle don't you know
My hammock is the way to go
There peace and solitude I find
To ease all troubles from my mind
Both body and soul revel in delight
As day surrenders to inky night
My tarp has a 10' 10" ridgeline (130 inches) and I use an 11 ft. hammock with continuous loops through end channels. If you use a hammock ridgeline length of 83% of the length of the hammock, that equals 109.5 inches.
The continuous loops through the channels add approx. 4.5 inches to each end, so now I have 118.5" that need tarp coverage. So the tarp is 130 inches, and that leaves 5.75" of coverage on each end. That's more than enough coverage.
I use whoopie hooks that act as break points for water running down the whoopie slings. I've also started making smaller continuous loops starting with 27.5" of Amsteel and 5" buries - I make sure to lock stitch the buries so the shorter bury has no chance of slipping. The smaller continuous loop adds 3" to the length of the hammock ridgeline for a total hammock length of 115.5 inches. That gives me 7.5" of coverage on each end.

I have the exact same setup as SilvrSurfr and I'm very happy with it.

It is tough to have just one tarp, but surprising how dry you can stay by pulling it down close. I got caught a while back with an edge tarp and blowing mist.I stayed dry IN the hammock ,but my underquilt got pretty damp, and there was really no way I could keep out the moisture without a sock or bigger tarp.Cannot say enough good things about the Superfly Tarp.
