Fairbanks, AK noob trying to learn more

    Hey all,

I've been lurking on this site for about a year and a half. I got a hammock last year and went on my first hang in March. It was awesome and I don't ever want to go back to my "ground dwelling" ways again!!! I've been out a couple of times since then but my lack of experience (and gear) has made things difficult, especially with the limited seasons available for camping outdoors if you don't have the right stuff. I would like to meet other more experienced hangers to learn from in this area. My family is not very outdoorsy (I am married with an 11yo son and 3yo daughter) right now so it will likely just be me for the near future, but I hope to convert my family to the darkside soon. Anyways, I look forward to getting to know all of you.

    Respectfully,
    Phillip

Hi, and welcome to the forums. That is some beautiful country you have to explore there. I spent about two weeks in 2010 and can't wait to go back. Anyways, good luck and be sure to watch some hammock how-to's on youtube from guys like Shug.

    Welcome from Philly.
When I was a kid the only time we were in the house was to eat and sleep.

I have become a huge fan of Shug's YouTube channel. I will be referring to it quite a bit as I start to get a bit more adventurous with my setup.

Welcome to HF from NC! I was in that area in 2002 on a BSA trip with my son's Troop. We hiked the Trail from the Eagle River to Crow Pass! It was awesome and difficult. You live in a beautiful area. It brings back a lot of memories. I was tent camping at that time. We were even fortunate enough to be able to get to camp at Fort Richardson. It helps when one of the Dad's happens to be a One Star General! You've come to the right place for all your Hammock questions and check out the Shug videos they are very informative!
