Tarp line, stretch or no stretch

Sorry if this has been asked before. It makes sense when members guided me towards a no stretch suspension system when I said I started using 550 cord but does the same concept apply to the tarp? Some stretch would be good to relieve tension off the material from wind flap but shock cord has too much give. What do you suggest as good guy line cordage? Would 550 cord suit well or would anyone recommend something good. Also, how many feet is safe enough to go with minimum? 50' or 100'?

No stretch is best. Shock cord or surgical tubing tensioners are used by some to take up the stretch in a wet silnylon tarp to keep it taught.

No stretch because once stretched, 550 cord is stretched. Above gmcttr linked the method I've seen a number of folks using that uses a static cord tieout, but shock cord or elastic tubing that will give, but then return to its original place.

550 cord, or similar, are great for many things. Suspensions, ridge lines and tie outs just are not among them. Good luck.
Grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the strength to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.

I'm in the no stretch camp. I also don't like shockcord tensioners because to use enough to really do what you want it to do is too much weight.
I just reposition my stakes to take up any slack from a wet tarp.

I too am a no stretch. I use spyderline as it it takes and holds knots very well. Even more importantly it unties easily in inclement weather. Was made for sailing, go figure. Down side is price. But the line lasts a long time too.

Tarp line, stretch or no stretch

I used paracord until my last trip out. It rained all night. Morning came and the tarp was a little loose. The worst for me was how much water the paracord holds. I now use Zing-it.

Ok, so no stretch seems to be the consensus. Thanks everyone!

I ended up ordering 180' of 2.2 mm lash it, it's supposed to have no stretch and rated for 580 lbs

Lots of us use lash it...it's good stuff and it splices fairly easily to put eyes in the ends.

    Gmcttr,
Is there a link you can share about splicing and adding eyes? I'm not familiar with it
