If you look carefully at the original design, the cross braces are in-line with the main uprights... the whole base is 3 times the width of a 2x4... Also, the braces are 2-piece, since the brace and main upright are in the same plane of movement...

Hope this helps. I can send detailed pics tonight, if you need them.

Nice graphic! I've looked thru this posting, but I can't seem to find the measurement between the support/arm and the brace. I assume it's 2', but can anyone confirm?

Thanks for the help everyone we had misread the supplies list thinking that all the wood was 2x4's. Looked closer at the plans and saw what was missing. We got the 1x4 today and tried it it out, works great!

You know, I don't think Trail has ever given the exact measurements, but it certainly looks like the support braces are 2 feet in from the ends. You can get a better look if you click on the pics in the first post - they open up in a larger size.

    Close enough .

22 1/2" to be precise . I measured in 1 1/2" from each side for the two upright bolts. I then splut the differnce of the distance between the bolts by three to get my final distance.

Seems to work well for most of the stands I have looked at prior to this one.

    DIY Instructions

I love this design, so I built my own. I showed off my creation to a few friends and they liked it, but asked for the plans. So, I pieced together some of the ideas from this thread and merged it with my experience from the build and put them all into a set of instructions.

    Here is my build:

Awesome. Exactly what I was looking for!
Anyone add an upper set of eye bolts for attaching tarps?

I liked the design so I had to make one. Finished it last night and gave it a try - inside. To darn hot to hang outside.

Wife wasn't real happy with the amount of room I took up in the living room, but sure did work good.

I hung a gathered end hammock that I made and slept good.

Now tonight, I am sure my 9 year old son will get to try.

Thanks for this and other threads on this forum. Just getting started, but what a great bunch of folks.
