    Attn: Mississippi Hangers

Have any of you Mississippi hammock hangers ever backpacked and camped in the Noxubee Hills Bike Trail area?

I live in Tupelo and have been looking at places to backpack out to and camp but that might be also be a little closer than Sipsey.

The Noxubee Hills Bike Trail area doesn't have the trails of Sipsey and I am sure it doesn't have the sights either but looks like a place that might have at least the potential to do some remote hanging.

Here are a couple links. Let me know if any of you know much about it. TIA

I hate to say it but the hiking in our area is just slim to none. I use to bike the http://oxfordcycling.org/clear-creek/ and have considered maybe trying it out one Saturday and camping next to the lake. There is also the http://www.americantrails.org/NRTDat...?recordID=3622 that I am going to explore this spring as camping is allowed and it is only a 20 minute drive for me. What about http://www.sipseywilderness.org/trip...o/report.html? I have been wanting to explore that area as I have not been since I was a child. I have learned that I can leave work at 5pm on a Friday and drive 2.5 hours to the Sipsey and be as happy as ever. It just seems that that is our best option. There is a new trail from Houston MS to New Albany on an abandoned RR but camping is not allowed and it does not seem that it will be in the future. It is also asphalt.....no thanks. So, that is all I can add to this. Anythime you are passing through Batesville, PM me and I may be able to meet you for lunch or something. My buddy and I would love to have a few folks to share our interest with around here. There are a couple of hangers in Oxford as well that we need to link up with.

The one between New Albany and Houston is the Tanglefoot trail. You wouldn't want to camp or hike on it. Have you thought about Big Hill Pond in Pocahontas, tn? It's not too far from Tupelo.

I have never heard of Big Hill Pond. I will have to google that. Thanks for sharing!

Yeah, I have cycled on the Tanglefoot Trail so I knew that wasn't an option. But the Noxubee Hills Trail system is looking more promising. Since posting this thread initially, I found a page on Facebook that has a lot of good information about camping there and it seems like a pretty cool place.

I know I can go to Sipsey and it is ideally what I am looking for, but having a closer option would be nice. Like Chriss said, backpacking, particularly in northern Mississippi, is pretty much nil.

Waldoxi has some hiking trails but I haven't been there in years. We should have a group hang at Big Hill pond sometime.

I looked up the Big Hill Pond and it looks like they don't allow camping except in the camping areas. In the backcountry areas it looks like they only allow you to stay in their shelters.

Bummer because it looks like a cool place but let me know if I read wrong.

For those of you who have Facebook, here is a link to the Noxubee Hills Trail System Facebook page:

    Facebook Link

If you go to the notes section you can read all about the trails and camping opportunities.

Looks like a GERAT place for a group hang.....hint, hint!

So maybe they don't police it that strongly?

I went to the official page and that is where I read the rules about no camping in the backcountry (can only stay in the shelters).
