Never been there but I do want to hear about your trip when you get back

Who cares about showers, gourmet food, using flush toilets. Just keep on walking and being away from it all.
There are times that the only way you can do something is to do it alone.
If you meet any, have them put their info in flatlines thread

Enjoy and have fun with your family, before they have fun without you
Watch out for the bird eating centipedes .
Lots of places to hang, hanger4life.
It's part of the thai culture.
Around Chiang Mai there's a lifetime of mountains, waterfalls,
hotsprings, caves etc to explore & hang around in.
Huay Tung Tao reservoir on the outskirts of Chiangmai has some quaint
shady bamboo shacks along the shoreline, some with hammocks,
where you can fish, swim or just lazeaway the day.
From the restaurants dotted along the shore, try the 'jumping shrimps'.
Hire a scooter / motorbike to get around & grab yourself a map.
Great food at some of the squid pier restaurants & the night market in Hua Hin.
Again there are some N.Parks close by.
After your long flight over, make sure you get yourself a 2hr Traditional Thai Massage,
that'll fix all your travel aches & pains, before you
head out on your asian adventure.

Don't stay long in Bankok, it is a big noisy city, and there are so many nicer areas away from there. ofuros, that was some great information. Wish I was on hammock forums back in 2006 and 2008 when I visited Thailand. Your information would have been awesome.
Also, if you get a chance to go to any ofthe islands, they are wonderful. I spent an entire day with a Thai guide touring around the island of Ko Samui. Riding an elephant so cool. also, went ziplining in the forest.
