    Polyurethane Tarp

Has anyone ever had any success waterproofing ripstop nylon by coating it with a polyurethane gloss? Would this even work?

PU coated nylon tarps are really inexpensive. I don't know if it's worth the effort. 10x12 for $60

If you're talking about wood finishes, no, I would expect it to be stiff and not usable at all.

The problem will be what to get as a polyurethane that is flexible enough and will penetrate the nylon enough to stick. Coated fabric is the lowest cost and arguably most rugged tarp material available. It is also the heaviest of the common light weight materials.
    YMMV
