    I got out today and tested this. It worked great. With self tensioning lines the tarp looked nice and clean. There was no sag.

    I agree 100%. Using the diamond tarp that comes with the HH, I've stayed amazingly dry through some humdinger storms by having the tarp on the ridgeline (down close to the hammock like nothermark is saying). Like he says, completely different story with a winter tarp - straight to the tree is better with it, but it weighs a lot more.

    Here's another benefit to hanging the tarp separately that isn't apparent until you actually have to do it: When it comes time to take things down, if the tarp is connected to the hammock, you have to get the tarp down before you can take the hammock down. If the tarp is hung separately, and things aren't in the way of each other, you can take down the hammock with the protection of the tarp. When it's raining or still drizzling, this makes a difference betweek a hammock packed up dry or wet.
