Talking Our "cult status" is intact.

OK, I sort of had help from the weather & the fact that my hiking partner dosn't stop shivvvvvvvering till it gets to 80 (S. Florida Native).
But after a COLD (to him) 40 degree night on the ground & a resultant mild case of Hypothermia, at teh RRG last Tue night I gave our sermon: "Here, try my hammock". In just 15 minutes he was back to normal, body temp wise. His first question after the typical "I HAVE GOT TO GET ONE OF THESE!" was "How do you get up in the morning?????" I just grinned knowingly, then told him "be glad it isn't raining, it's nearly impossible to get out of with a steady rain on the tarp."
Granted, my underquilt will likely get a norml to 30 & the overquilt is equally toasty, his stuff was an OLD 40 degree bag, & even his opinion was that new the temp raiting was generous, VERY generous. With a rather well used Z-rest under him.

He is now the proud owner of a (slightly modified) Grand Trunk Hybred. Altho actually he dosn't know he owns it, I want him to spend a night or 3 in it before I spring that on him.

Matt was a hardcore groundling, 'I'll never go to a hammock, they are too cold!". Yea, my "too cold" hammock saved his hike.

"And anther one leaves the dust"

So, what is your "conversion" story?
When you have a backpack on, no matter where you are, you’re home.
PAIN is INEVITABLE. MISERY is OPTIONAL.

God told me that I would be struck down if I didn't convert at least 50 people to hammocks. Oh yeah, and everybody is supposed to send me money too; 50 million should do!

Way to go Doctari! Love it when the 'groundlings' have to eat their own words. Nothing so difficult in this world as getting out of the hammock on a cold and rainy day. I was worried my Trail Name would be changed to "Noon".

Doc - I did the same thing with my wife this past January while backpacking on the Cumberland Island National Seashore - she complained about being cold in the tent in the 40's so I hung my Speer with the PeaPod and she truly wouldn't get out of it the next morning. Now she'll only go camping if I bring the Speer and doesn't complain as much when I buy "extra stuff" for my hammock collection!

I haven't posted here in a while, but purple's post piqued my interest....

How did you like the backpacking on Cumberland? I've thought about going a few times, but every time I make the drive to the GA coast I always end up doing touristy stuff around Savannah.

My hiking buddies and I, the "Corps of Insanity", have gone down there each January for the past three years and hiked just about all of the Island that is public. Dec, Jan, & Feb are the best times in my opinion as the bugs are not as bad and the Island has less people on it. It's a special place for my wife and I as we spent time over there 24 years ago on our honeymoon and my in-laws have done three month stints living on the Island as volunteers for the National Park Service on two different occasions . It is truly God's Country and one of the best kept secrets in the Southeastern US in my opinion. There is so much history there, from Coastal Indians, Revolutionary War heros to Robber Barons. Wildlife is plentiful with albino deer, wild turkey, wildcats, 'gators, etc. I have stood on a dock on the River side of the Island and watched porpoises herd mullet up onto a mud bank and then throw themselves up on the bank and eat them. Sea turtles lay eggs on the shore in the summer, and wild horses roam freely from one end of the Island to the other.

In short, I love it! Did I gush enough? LOL
