"If you've ever had to go to ground"

A phrase I have heard often on HF. I haven't even camped once in a hammock but I am building my setup now in hopes to do a lot of it this spring. Can someone please explain how this works just in case? I plan on taking a blue wally pad but envision the net just laying on my face. Lol. Perhaps suspending one end to a tree/high rock or whatever so it isn't on your face? I'd like to avoid looking like a complete idiot.

    cool topic....I'm interested as well.

only did cursory research myself though....

found this photo in a thread buried somewhere a few weeks ago and thought it was pretty cool so I saved it.

Not sure what hammock it is.

If I am going in to a place where there is a concern about a place to hang I take a light weight pad like a Neo air and pitch my tarp with my trekking poles throw the pad in and climb in and leave hammock in pack . Has worked well on the few times I have had to do it.

Trekking poles or sticks are what most use. While it is not ideal, it can be done with about the same amount of trouble as a tent...

I've gone to ground a few times. I was lucky to have friends nearby to help me back into my hammock. I'm sure that is not what you had in mind, though.

I have seen some people innovate at Trail Days with hammock gear. They use hiking poles or sticks to make bipods guyed out to keep bug netting away from their face. Your closed cell foam pad or any decent sleeping pad should work just fine.

Oh, and the more you hike, the less you will care about looking like a fool. That concern goes away quickly. I got over it on my first three day backpack.

EDIT: You said 'idiot', not 'fool'. Nevermind.

Idiot, fool, whack job. You get the idea. Net-in-face doesn't sound to good, but neither does sleeping on the ground so it will just have to work.

Not ideal is right, but at least I'll have a clue what to do so I don't panic with the sun going down. Thanks!
