I have yet to go to ground, but I know that my hammock is well fitted for that setup. Since it has three layers, and the bottom one being waterproof, it can be used as a small bivy. This pic is from their website:

Only thing that sucks is that I use amsteel in the end channels, and I'd have to remove that for it to strecht out in a rectangle.

That's a nice looking "Plan B". I have done the exact same in practice, but the gathered end hammocks don't look so perfect, but they can be used effectively.
We are now ready to start our way down the Great Unknown. We are three quarters of a mile in the depth of the earth. We have an unknown distance yet to run, an unknow river yet to explore. What falls there are, we know not; what rocks beset the channel, we know not; what walls rise over the river, we know not. Ah, well! We may conjecture many things. The men talk as cheerfully as ever; jests are bandied about freely this morning; but to me the cheer is somber and the jests are ghastly. Powell 1869

Ok, easy with a pad (tarp already in your kit).
But what do you do when you only have two quilts as insulation? That is the only thing holding me back from switching to under quilt. I have the hammock, tarp, top quilt, all the dutchware I want, but can't force myself to give up on the self inflating pad.

The only thing that comes to my mind is to go survival and make a bed of leaves or fill a survival bag with grass etc... I really hate carrying stuf "just in case" (and it would defeat the weight saving of down UQ).
Is there a magic trick I'm missing to use a proper hammock setup as a bearable shelter on the ground?

I'm interested in this as well. I'll be camping for 28 days this summer on my Alaska trip, and I figure there may be 2 or 3 nights on the tundra where trees won't be an option. But I don't want to waste space with a tent.
I'm thinking that tying one end off on the motorcycle, and one on a pole that is being used for the tarp mod will make it alright. I have a Exped UL7 and a groundcloth, so I think I'll be ok.

In the case my straps broke? I'd hang my tarp like I normally do, just that the corners would touch the ground, and because I don't believe in pads, I'd gather leaves from around me, and lay my TQ/sleeping bag on the ground. The mosquito net, hmmm? I guess I could "jerry rig" it to my tarp somehow, and just lay on it....

I'm in the process of making a UQP/raincape to go with the Underwoobie. As a UQP it just snaps to the Underwoobie. Going to ground it snaps up to make a browse bag, TQ and UQ are both Underwoobies, so one is used as a shelter, the other as a sleeping bag.

I should have it finished this weekend, maybe some pics next week.
