    D.I.Y. Tarp Material???

I'm a total noob, so bear with me. I've searched and searched and could not find any real answers to my questions. Essentially, where can I get the material needed to make my own tarp? Which material is best for a first time tarp maker? (I can sew)

I would like to make a 12 or 11 foot hex-tarp with a couple pull outs on each side and I want to put some cat-cuts into it as well. Any tips associated with tarp making are much appreciated as well.

Silpoly or silnylon from ripstopbytheroll.com is a good choice. Silnylon has been around for a long time but silpoly is really catching on. It has less stretch than silnylon and better UV resistance.
You'll learn a lot with your first project, so have fun!

Check the "vendors" section of the forums. You are looking for silnylon or silpoly. Any of those vendors will have the right material for you. If you're car camping, you can go with heavier material like a 1.9 oz/sy or heavier, but if you are trying to lighten your backpack as much as possible, a 1.1 oz/sy material is durable enough if taken care of properly.

I've always had better luck sewing the ridgeline seam first.

Use 100% polyester thread like Gutterman's.

I just finished one made of sil poly gen2 from ripstopbytheroll.com. There are a couple of pics in my gallery. I basically made it a 11ft Ridgeline rectangle. Check out diygearsupply.com for an easy how too for a hex tarp as well as xtrekker's video on it.
