    Cheap rip stop nylon 1.1

I know I made that fabric comparison sheet and all, but I still can't figure out where to get rip stop 1.1 for the best price. I'd have to order it unless anyone knows of a Canadian retailer (our Walmarts don't even have stanco grease pots)

Or should I just plunge into SUL with ripstop ARGON like the ever brave countryroads? That's only 8$ per yard.

    Ripstopbytheroll.com
    DIYGearSupply
    Magna Fabrics

Or get the Argon if you want a hammock that has holes in it after something like 8 hangs.

Magna Fabrics is the best price but you have to order a whole roll of it, so if you only plan on making one hammock it won't be worth it. But if there's a chance you'll really get hit with the DIY bug then it is worth it. Next would be DIY Gear Supply, he has good prices for 1.1 seconds. If you want firsts then Ripstopbytheroll.com would be a good choice, although you have to wait to get your stuff.

How about $0.59 /yd? Shipping in the States adds about $1 /yd as it is only sold on the roll. I have no idea what shipping to Ontario may cost.

You will curse living in Canada with each order you have to place.

After much, and I mean much, research trying to source DIY supplies here in Canada, I gave up...they don't exist.

Fabricland had 2nds of sil that looked disgusting, had no weight references and wanted 15.99 a metre.

What I did was to design everything - hammock, tarp, bug net, guy lines, etc. etc. etc. and then I calculated all the materials needed and put them on a spreadsheet. I priced all the parts lists out and found that even if I paid a little more for something small from one supplier it was better to place a large order from one that split it and pay for two orders coming in.

With the exception of some stuff that Scott @ DIYGearSupply didn't carry (my bridge hammock spreader bars for one), I placed one very large order from him.

Over the course of the first year I probably spent what most hammockers would spend on a good tarp on shipping alone.

The good news is that by shipping USPS, there's no broker involved so there's no brokerage fees and Canada Post didn't charge me HST (we're supposed to self report on our tax returns....)

Oh and shipping averaged about 10 to 14 days after the orders left the suppliers.

Actually, I have the good fortune of having relatives in the states - just means I need to have everything arrive before Feb 28 if I want it in the next year. I feel like a shopaholic that's making horrendous choices - hence all them spreadsheets.

    Exactly.

    .
Ask Scott, he'd tell you in a heartbeat if he felt you shouldn't be using it for hammocks.

I think the 2nds are just blemishes in the colour but when you figure out the difference in price on the yardage for 1 hammock is it really worth it. I mean we're spending a whole bunch to make a complete outfit, why sell it short just to save a couple of bucks.

It's kinda like spending 5 grand on vacation in the Caribbean but eating at McDonalds while you're there.

Absolutely. Seconds are typically just firsts with cosmetic blemishes. Some places will list what the blemish is so if there does happen to be something structurally wrong with it you'll know.

I've got a hammock hanging up right now made from seconds.
