    Winter Hammock

Looking at underquilts for my Blackbird, It hit me that I could just have two hammocks; a summer and winter one. Get a light weight 3 season UQ for the BB, and then make my own simple double hammock with a sewn in UQ on the bottom of the winter hammock.
Since then I've seen pics from Just Jeff's web site of such a creature. Has anyone else tried such a thing?
I know, I know, it's to early to be thinking about winter again!

I wouldn't do a double layer with insulation sewn to the bottom...on mine, the layers separated just enough to create an air gap between my body and the insulation.

My second model works much better. I'll probably make another one for next winter.

Not sure if you're set on the UQ but it is possible to hang in the winter with the right gear/clothing combo in a single layer hammock. I know I'm new here but I hang every night in the outdoors. It was down in the teens here for several weeks this year and I slept quite well.

    MH Piute 20° bag
    Academy brand (Magellan) Mummy pad
    Thermolite Bivy
    Standard 1/2" sleeping pad
    Gore-tex Bivy

Slide the mummy pad inside the thermolite bivy and then slide both into your bag. No slipping off and you have a nice fleece covered mummy pad to sleep on.

would the mummy pad, therm bivy, 1/2 pad, and gore bivy weigh the same as a full length UQ? I've used my old army gore-tex bivy, puss pad, and 20+ sleeping bag and it was a pain in the arss to get into everything while in the Blackbird. I figured making my own gathered end hammock with a built in full length UQ would be lighter and pack smaller than all that other stuff. Plus I'll be able to make it in Multicam! Love that stuff!

If you're doing full-length, you should do down b/c of how it poofs up to conform under your legs. Sheet insulation doesn't work that way...I still have a hammock made from a full-length of PrimaLoft in the garage. I used it once and didn't like how it left a gap under my legs. If you want synthetic, I have an idea for how to fix that, though...let me know and I'll post more details.

I might even sell you the hammock for the cost of materials...then you could mod it from there.

Thanks for the offer Jeff, but I want to make it out of Multicam. I do intend to use Down, hopefully Stormcrow will have some left over. I'm planning on starting it sometime in aug/sep. I'll be bugging you then for advice!

Haha - no problem. I have the same addiction to olive drab that others have to camo and multi-cam. The one I'm talking about is OD green.

Just Jeff, I like the Multicam and Coyote browns as I haven't found an environment that they don't blend well. OD green is a close third.

FireFlyburns, I'll have to try an UQ under the same conditions in order to give an opinion. But I haven't tried out a BB so I'm not sure why it was so difficult to get in/out of. Did you put the pad inside of your thermo bivy and then both inside your bag? If not the bag won't stay on the pad. I have the same woodland Gore-tex bivy. It helps to keep you from sliding around inside the hammock.

The main problem is my sleeping bag is left handed and my bivy is right, and my light weight sleeping bag is right. It's just a mess.
