    Broken Strap

This morning as usual, I woke up early, twisted around a bit and went back to sleep. About a half hour later, BOOM!, well, that's what I thought. What I knew for sure was that I was laying on my back on the floor. I have a lamp beside my hammock and I felt around and turned it on, sure enough, I was on the floor. Further investigation showed me that the strap on the foot end of my hammock had broken where it entered the cinch buckle.
The strap is one I bought around two years ago, I think from Amazon, it is a camo, mil spec strap that several forums members were buying at the time in odd length rolls and pretty cheap. I have used this strap for a lot of hangs with out issue, BUT, when I started using it with cinch buckles I found that if I set up and did no adjustments for a few days, it would slip a bit during the night and mess up my hang. To counter this I added a slippery half hitch behind the buckle on each end. At this point my un-scientific conclusion is that being held by the cinch buckle at the exact same place, over several nights with a large body bearing on it, the strap compressed enough to significantly weaken it and it broke. For set ups that change every day I feel that there would have been no problem, but for hangs that are static for longer periods of time here at home, I will use chain.

Ouch! I've switched to using 3000 lb webbing with cinch buckles on my full time hang and inspect it all regularly.

Yes, I was not hurt. As advised, I try not to hang higher than I'm willing to fall, and there was nothing under me but carpet, and I landed flat on my back, not on my hips or head.

I think I will try that as well. What was your source for 3000?

I have a black webbing on one end that I can't figure out where I got it and camo on the other end that came from Gary at Readystrap. If you haven't ordered from him before, you email what you want to buy and he will confirm or clarify if needed and then send a pay request (which I've never received until he has shipped). Being use to shopping online it seemed a bit screwy at first, but he is extremely good to do business with.

It isn't the lightest thing, but I've been having good luck with it. I get some super strong webbing from http://www.uscargocontrol.com/Webbin...yester-Webbing.

It is 4500lb breaking strength. It is pretty beefy but I have been using it mostly with rings. I tried it with a cinch buckle but I think it was too thick to work well. They have a good price there and I think it is pretty easy to work with.

Lately I've haven't even been using hardware. I've been using a sheep bend knot from my webbing to my amsteel continuous loop. I like it and I think I can adjust it just about as quickly as I could with my rings. Who knows... I may go back to whoopies soon just for fun lol.

Sorry that happened to you and glad you're OK. Bet that scared Georgia Girl!
I concur Gary has some of the best straps I've ever seen and I suggest you go ahead and get his Lock&Load Quickdraws, affordable and a great guy to do business with.
