Video : A Brief Primer on Hammock Suspension, Part I : webbing

    Here's the link.

I give an overview of how one can add webbing based suspension to a hammock. In particular I show

    • making a figure-8 knot at the end of webbing, for a carbiner
    • hanging a hammock that has webbing suspension and carbiners at both ends
    • adding rings to the end of a hammock with a channel, using the channel, and attaching around the hammock body
    • using the JRB triglide system

There isn't much here for the hammock cognoscenti, unless you like seeing me hit the ground because I had the knot in the loop ring on which SMC rings are attached in the wrong place. Lesson : knot next to rings means the prusik knot is not pinching as it should.

Now I'm teeing up another one that focuses on suspension techniques based on cord.

Someone should point out that the SMC rings can be tied onto the stock HH rope with no modidfications to the actual hammock. That was what I did with my Scout until I sold it. That might be a bridge onto the rings & webbing for the newbie HH owners.

I giggled when you slipped to the ground...

I plan on having the next one include using a garda hitch on a stock HH, and figured to make this very point in that segment. You laugh at my misfortune

Thanks. I was able to borrow a wireless mic from work, and that helped with the sound a lot. But....you wished to laugh at my misfortune ?

I must have told my better half they were $9...that's the figure that's stuck in my head. $9 or $16, a great deal on a basic but very functional hammock. Or two.

Now if you and Mr. Shug could hook up what a hoot that would be
I've been planning to make this for a while, but when the BB recently got reviewed on BackpackGearTest.com and the reviewer didn't really know what to do with the webbing set-up, I knew I had to get this done.

I would dearly like to log some miles and shoot some vid with Shug. Had hoped to pull that off with the Northern Hang in a couple of weeks but I had to back out of that gig.

Ha! Now that's funny. I didn't even notice. I use probability a lot in what I do, and I've read measure theory enough to pick up the lingo. In real life I'm been caught saying that something will happen "with probability 1" and I get funny looks. Almost surely.

To me it seems the tri-glide system would be the most difficult to adjust.
If the hammock is hanging loose, its all about the same to me, rings, buckle, or triglide, with the exception that you can tighten a ring set-up with one hand. The larger difference is setting up and taking down, and in my book that difference is not significant enough to come down hard on one device or the other. There is a difference in weight, 45 grams for a full set of rings, 56 grams for a pair of cinch buckles, 22 grams for a pair of triglides. But to really save weigh I go to cord....stay tuned....

All this is predicated on the assumption that the hammock is hanging loose. I don't think you can easy crank up the tension using the triglides, and that actually is a good thing.

That particular technique is one I learned from Warbonnetguy. All his hammocks do that.

Everyone else...thanks for the appreciation. The vids are labors of love, but we like it when others like 'em too.

Thumbs up How to video re suspension

That is a GREAT video, Grizz. It sums up some 100 sum pages, and two threads in a video format! Thanks so much for giving us visual types something to focus on in doing our suspension swap outs. I have used the ring and webbing method on my DD hammock.

Great video Griz! Thanks for condensing and simplifying, and making it look as easy as it is.

I'm using the mason's line thru the channel technique with rings. For my hammock I have a straight channel on the head end and a "W" channel on the foot end. This gives me a bump for the knees.

Speaking from experience, the slippery half hitch is IMPORTANT!
