    Thinking of upgrading my tarp

    Hi everyone,

I've been thinking of upgrading my tarp. I currently use the HH hex tarp (the 70D PU coated one) I'm looking at picking up a WB Superfly. How much does the Superfly weigh? I know the HH hex tarp is considered heavy, but I've been fine hiking with it. I really like the extra coverage and the doors of the superfly and if the weight is about the same it seems like a great upgrade.

I was also wondering if there were any big differences in the materials (sil vs PU coated) I've heard silnylon can "mist" but if its not much I can deal with it.

    Thanks in advance folks

You should defiantly check out the Oldman Winter by Wilderness Logics.
In addition to doors, the OMW has 3 stake our loops, per side, which add to it ability to deflect wind and allow it to handle snow with no fear.
Also several different pole modifications make it my favorite.

Per the Warbonnet site, the Superfly is 1 lb, 3 oz (19 oz) for either sil version or 3 lb, 2 oz (50 oz) for the Multicam version.

    Hope it helps!

The superfly seems like a good one, but I will look more into it for you.

Thanks FLRider! that was exactly what I was looking for. I don't know how I missed the specs on the website. According to the HH site the 70D hex tarp is 23 oz. The Superfly is 1 foot shorter though.

I sold my SF and replaced it with OMW and I'm very glad that I did.
I had Marty sew in center pole pockets and I have the 2 ext pole mod also.
Def. enough coverage for a extended stay.

Yep, it's shorter, but the Superfly has integral doors. So does the OMW that's being touted in the thread, but I've not seen one of those up close, so I can't really compare 'em.

The Superfly will offer a superior wind block over the Hennessy Hex, due to those doors. Whether or not that's something that's necessary for your outdoors enjoyment is something that only you can answer.

Also, most hammocks have ridgelines of ~9.5' or less (an 11' hammock body, at the usual 83% ridgeline length, will have ~9' 2" between whipping ends), so an 11' tarp is plenty long (nearly a foot of space on either end), especially when it has doors. (Wow, run-on sentence much? Sorry.)

    Anyway, hope it helps!

The superfly is still unbeatable imo.. COST wise.. I have had mine in some serious wind, and didn't need anything else to stabilize it, it is good to go as is..
Marty does make great gear as well, I have owned a couple of his tarps and loved them..
However, omw will add up costly with the extra options.. All up to you in the long run.....However you choose will be a win- win situation..
We would be one step closer to world peace, if everyone slept in a hammock..
