under quilt from a down sleeping bag

    Hello all

I have a lead on two down sleeping bags that Im thinking I can harvest the down from for a really nice under quilt and providing there is enough down to also fill a top quilt.

I know I could probably convert these but I want it to work more seemlesly and in a nicer color.

The bright blue just simply wont go.

Any way so have amy of you done this or have suggestions on checking the down for qualit and gettimg the loft back as much as possoble out of these older bags?

No you don't smell do you have any idea of the quality of the down and what percentages of down that are in the bags you are wanting to work with?

I would wash the bags first with some good Down Wash. Then dry them good so that the down fluffs well.
This article show how to get down in a Quilt…..reverse to get it out I presume.

I guess the other question is it a good idea for the grade of down both bags are $100 so for slightly more I could get the same amount of down at 850

$100 sounds kind of high for used items of unknown origin. I have bought high quality for $10 to 20 USD.

With bed bugs and such, if you are debating buy new. If you buy down to recycle, be sure to clean it before you take it in your home. It is amazing what a good cleaning does.

I would go to a laundromat with large FRONT LOADING washers and big 50 pound dryers. Use minimal soap. To dry put something in the dryer to thump around on the wads of wet down. The last time I dried a down quilt, I let the dryer run for a while, then took the quilt out and put the clots of down between two white fluffy towels and rolled the quilt and towels together to get rid of a lot of the moisture.

Use lots of time, when you think the quilt/bags are dry take them out and let them cool off then feel them for lumps or damp spots. You will probable find limps which will be down that has not dried yet. Back into the dryer on very low heat. Not a Speedy project, but very important to have the down completely dry.

I made blanks for my new quilts, just like the blanks LostBiker makes (his are much nicer than what I made). Then I put the down in the blanks now I have my nice TQ and UQ. I like them, I like the colors I chose. Just do what you think you want to do. I find high quality sleeping bags fairly often, also down coast with high grade goose down.

in order to get the same amount of loft from the 600 fill power down, you'll be adding a bit more than you would with the 850 FP. I'm just guessing here... a 10º 72"x48" quilt with 3" of loft in 8 chambers would be around 12 oz. of 850 FP down, in order to get the same 3" loft, you'd be packing in at least another 1/2 oz. per chamber (or more?) so.. 16 oz. of 600 FP down?

    Just a guess-timate

Cool. My first underquilt was a Golite synthetic topquilt converted, this long before commercially available underquilts were available.
