I actually just made a similar tarp out of a painter's dropcloth. Surprised you didn't go that route, it was $3 and quite light although it hasn't been through a 'real' storm yet.

Definitely interesting with the pencil reinforcements. I used the rubber band tensoiner method but would have preferred shock cord if I had any lying around.

I don't really see how that would help but I am a newbie here so.....

Just messing around, sorry. I read and re-read that a couple of times and my immature self chuckled. All in good fun.

I bought two $4 clear shower curtains from WalMart and duct taped them together. It has held up for over a year.

well here she is set up... I used paracord on the ridgeline and well lesson learned. paracord stretches a lot. slept in it threw a light rain last night and stayed dry we had about a 7 mph wind and I had no issues at all will the setup.
I have sil nylon on the way and will soon be replace these cheap tarps out but never the less it worked.

Two questions, and be gentle, please, I'm new at the hammocking thing.

If you don't plan on going out in bad weather, why do you need a tarp at all, just in case?

How does the tensioner work? (Why no, I'm not an engineer.)

    Thanks.

well here in TN the weather man lies for example a few days ago there was a 0% change of rain and yet out of no where we had a 20 min. shower. so it is for just in case and I am going to test in the rain by myself so in the event it happens while I have my wife and kids out I will know they will be dry.

with out the tensioner when everything settle and stretches the guy lines would be loose by having shock cord on them it allows them to self adjust to keep things tight. and it also allows a little give for when someone trips on a guy line.
