    Parallelogram Hammock

Last night, I got a bit creative. I've been tossing this idea around for a few weeks, and I finally decided to give it a go.

Basically, instead of using a rectangular piece of fabric to start, I actually used a parallelogram. My cutting angle was approximately 30 degrees. The resulting parallelogram had corners of 60 degrees and 120 degrees.

The resulting hammock has an incredibly flat lay. The lay angle is more extreme than in a traditional hammock. I found that it was much less constricting on my shoulders (not that a traditional hammock is bad). I also found that the "flaps" on the edges were less irritating.

I'm not certain the load is as evenly distributed as in a traditional hammock, so I will have to test it for some time to see if there is a failure.

I attached a few pictures. Has anyone ever done anything like this?

I know I look like I'm 'curved' in the first picture, but I think it's a camera trick. My left leg was bent slightly, but all-in-all, I was laying flat and straight.

If it involves hanging a piece of fabric between two trees...this crowd has done it.

The thought has crossed my mind, actually while laying in my hammock in Maine last summer, but never got around to it. From the photos it looks like a channel end. Is that correct?
Most of us end up poorer here but richer for being here. Olddog, Fulltime hammocker, 365 nights a year.

That's correct. I've never done a whipped-end, but I imagine that work better, probably.

I've played with it myself. I think much of the potential is lost by shifting of the weave effectively turning it back into a rectangle.

14 feet. I measured in 30 inches on each edge to cut off the triangles, effectively making it 30 inches shorter, in total. Thus, the raw blank was 11.5 feet, and the finished hammock was roughly 11 feet.

Do you mean over time, or immediately?

My biggest concern is that it seems the very center of the fabric bears more weight than it normally would. Over time, it may stretch, or even break. However, as far as immediately, the lay is significantly different than a rectangular hammock of the same length.

My goal was to have a lay that is very close to parallel to the direction of the channels, resulting in 'walls' that are less rigid.
