11' or 12' Tarp Ridge Line??

I am at a decision point with my 8' wide tarp I'm building. My 11'x10' tarp has, of course, an 11' ridge line and it does fine - but it has a bunch of extra width. For this one I thought I'd do a 12' ridge line.

But - there seem to be some questions popping up in my brain - like, if I have a 12' ridge, will I have to hang the tarp higher than normal to avoid the hammock suspension hitting the tarp? And if that's so, then how weather-protective will a tarp be if it's way higher than the hammock?

So right now it's cut and hemmed at 12' long, ready to receive tie-outs and ready for my cat-cuts on the sides. but I'm not so sure about that 12' length. Any thoughts or advice on this? I've actually thought about leaving it at 12' and cutting it to a 12x8 hex (with 8-foot-long sides, cutting 2 ft out from each end). Sort of like a WB Edge but 12' long.

BTW, my hammock is an 11' SLD Streamliner with about a 9.2' fixed ridge line. So at 11', I'd have maybe a foot or so at each end, but at 12', I'd have 1.5 feet.

    Thoughts?

Yikes, that's a tough choice. You'd have to hang almost a full foot higher than with an 11' (if my math is right), to ensure you clear your hammock suspension. Which then means the reduced width of your tarp is even less likely to protect your hammock. I would really suggest 11'...

I think you should go try it out and report back

I like to be able to hang the tarp higher when it's warmer out (e.g. before bedtime) so I have more headroom sitting up and more space to hang stuff to dry. Then the extra coverage comes in handy to block a little more wind at each end when I pitch it down tight for the night.

AKA I take the extra half an ounce for more coverage options (I use a hex shape though). But you won't know if the tarp works for you until you go try it out. It will all depend on your sag, height, diagonal, etc.

To me, the tarp line bumping up against your hammock suspension is not a big deal. The biggest concern I'd have is the 8' width of your tarp. Wind with rain will require you to drop it down low to cover the sides of the hammock to keep dry.
The tarp I have now is 11' and over an 11' hammock. The cat cuts are a bit severe and it's down low in bad weather.

It's not the bumping that's the problem. It's the fact that you can't actually lower the tarp past the point where ridge meets your hammock suspension. Then, the 8' width is even more extreme, because you cannot lower the tarp low enough to compensate.

Your math is off. With a 30* hang angle and 12" (6" on each end) additional length it will be roughly 3" higher (without doing the math).

Doh... I used 12 inches on either side, not 6.

    Math is...
    tan 30 = x / 6"
    6 tan 30 = ~3.5 inches

I have no idea what I did in the first place. I had come up with 0.85 feet, but now can't replicate, even using 12 inches.

That sounds like a nice bit of coverage. I had the bright idea to trim off 12" from my DIY silnylon tarp a few years ago to save a little weight. When it was all said and done I had saved a fraction of an ounce for adequate coverage that turned into stretch it to make it fit when I made a longer and more comfortable hammock. My lesson was to not let a fraction of an ounce dictate my comfort. It sounds like you have it covered really well.

Sound lesson here. I, as I'm sure many of us are, am so soon old, so late smart. Just after making a 11' long tarp, I found it was just barely able to provide adequate coverage. The next one was a hair under 12' with doors and so much easier.
