    Hammocks for Typhoon Victims

I was contacted this weekend by a friend with family in the Philippines. They are typhoon victims who lost everything and are trying to rebuild their lives.

One of the items that have been of great use are hammocks that have been purchased in the U.S. and then shipped over to them.

PROBLEM: The hammocks have not been holding up to extended daily use.
I am not certain of the make of the hammocks that have been sent thus far, my guess would be they come from Walmart.

I have been asked to source Canvas hammocks for them.

Other than googling up some sources, I have no experience purchasing canvas hammocks, so I am open to suggestions.

This week I will be getting more details on what has been used, what failed etc.

NEEDED: Any specific recommendation for Canvas Hammocks, and related suspension.

INFORMATION: Does anyone know of any organization specifically donating/distributing hammocks in the Philippines for typhoon victims?

IDEAS: I am going to 1) suggest a canvas hammock after some research, 2) make a couple double layer ripstop hammocks with whoopies to send over, 3) look into getting some donated hammocks and finding a way to distribute them to those in need.

For those that don't know, Typhoon Yolanda (here we called it Haiyan) was the strongest recorded typhoon to make landfall, struck in Nov 2013, killed over 6000 people and sadly, remains are still being discovered to this day.

Any thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.

    Cheers
    -Peter

A thought comes to mind, if a hammock is strung up too tightly, and loaded , the forces on it are great. If something like this is happening, then the fabric might be failing. I am sure that the survivors over there are not going to line up for lessons in hammock hanging, but if something in the way of instructions could be included with any hammock sent over there it might help.

Awesome thing you're doing. I would skip the whoopies and go with a cinch buckle type of suspension for the very reason old4hats mentioned with regard to the lack of knowledge of modern hammock practices.

My hammocks take daily use (abuse).
So probably user error on that end.

I would shy away from sending whoopies, they have a fairly high learning curve to them. Maybe a webbing suspension that can be tied off would be better.

    Thanks gang, keep it coming.
I have plenty of cinch buckles and webbing so I will go that route.

I too use my hammock daily, but I invested a fair piece of coin and keep in mind the basics when using it. No sharps, no shoes, etc.

Indeed it could be and probably is to whatever extent, user error.

Including some diagrams, some stout fabric, webbing and cinch buckles is what I will probably do.

Canvas was specifically requested so I will do something there as well.

Absolutely tragic over there, and having been slammed here in NJ the last couple years, I know a little bit about how it is. We were fortunate that winds died down substantially as that monster Sandy rolled in, Yolanda had sustained winds of 140-170mph on land, I can only imagine.

Mid week I should be taking to folks to get a better idea of what is needed.
