    stake out BB

If you use a corner staked tarp where do you stake out the Black Bird? The simple way is carry 2 more stakes. Can this be avoided? Perhaps there is a simple solution and I am suffering from brain freeze.

I've just been carrying two extra ground hog stakes. In another thread somewhere here there are those mentioning that they are just extending out to one of the corner tarp stakes. I plan to try this and see how it works. As long as it doesn't create too much of an angle on the lines coming off the tie-outs it should work. I usually like the BB tie-out lines on each side to be evenly spaced between the little metal ring without pulling them together too tightly if that makes sense. It seems that you get more stability particularly with the shelf if the line comes out as a straight as possible pulling the material out and away from the hammock. If you get too far over to one side the shelf may not lift up and away as much. Just a thought as I haven't tried it yet.

I have been attaching mine to the center tarp tie out on the JRB 10x11 tarp itself. I suppose I could do the same at the corners if there was no center tie out, though I might have to extend the cord length a bit. I don't put much tension on the elastic tie outs anyway, so it doesn't seem to effect the tarp pitch much.

Unlike a tarp where there is a lot of tension on the stake and hence you need a strong stake to dig firmly into the ground, with the BB tie-outs the tension is small. I've done fine just finding sticks off the ground that will go in deeply enough to pull the sides out.

Depends on the type of ground of course. YMMV.

Agree with Grizz. I'm in an area of very rocky ground, but I'm still able to find something to work for the wings when needed.
Using the tarp stakes as attachment points does work and I've done it several times, but it does angle fairly hard. Doesn't make too much of a difference to the lay of the hammock, but it isn't quite as sexy.

I have two 0.25oz shepherd's hook stakes which work fine for this no strain application.

what is the purpose of staking it out? Is it more comfortable? Secure? in other words why stake at all?

It feels roomier staked out. No other real benefit.

it pulls the net away from you for more interior room and so the netting doesn't droop onto your face. on the other side it holds the shelf and it's contents away from the hammock so they don't hang against you.

you can use them without if you like or need to though

I have run a string between the tarp tabs on one side of the hammock, and used that to support the pull-out if I don't have an extra stake available. I also have a tab in the center of the tarp side that I can attach the wing to, if needed.
