Why hammocks and knives don't go together

Well, you don't often hear of hammock tragedies, but here's one from Oklahoma:

I knew this story wouldn't end well when I read the thread title, but had no idea how tragic it actually was.

So sad, the uncle will struggle with this for the rest of his days on this earth.

I agree with every comment so far, and add this, at any time small folks are around an extra measure of care is always in order. I cannot imagine what I would do if I had been the uncle, so sad.

    Tragic

Freak accident. There is no way to have foreseen this. My thoughts, prayers and heart go out to the boy, his uncle and family.

Seems like a freak accident. That really sucks though. I know it would really suck to be the uncle and I would feel just as awful, but hopefully he understands that he is not to blame. Accidents happen and there is no way you can foresee something like that happening. It is pretty crazy that he fell out of a hammock and somehow accidentally stabbed the child though. I have fallen in my hammock a couple times just testing new knots, so I can see how it could break after the kid pushed on it. I can't imagine how hard it must be to go through something like that.

Wow... Such a tragic incident. Accidental, yes, and not anyone's fault, but I'm sure he will blame himself for the rest of his life. So sad

I disagree strongly with the sentiment that it is no one's fault. When handling a knife, one should be in control of as many variables as possible. A hammock is not a stable place to be using a knife. A 4 year old is not predictable, especially boys.

While this tragedy was not easily foreseen, it was preventable. The uncle is not murderous, evil, or a criminal. He is also not exculpated by the circumstances.
