I know it's not the UP, but I just returned home from Fisherman's Island in Charlevoix (I live in TN). Site #9 was perfect for my Hennessy and a friend's 8 person tent. The site is now reserved through October, but I loved the park so much that I returned home earlier this week and promptly reserved 4 more nights there on a campsite slightly further south. Can't tell by the pics whether I'll be able hammock (the shoreline has plenty of trees, so I think I can make it work.. dh will be in the tent with our son).

Just finished an overnight hang of Fife Lake Loop on NCT about 18 miles south of Kalkaska. Great dispersed camping on some hardened campsites overlooking the Manistee River. https://caltopo.com/m/U165 Good luck!

A spot on the NCT just north of the manistee river trail is one of my favorite spots. It starts just north of mesick (on # 12 road) and goes east as far as you want (I normally go about 25 miles and stop at old us 131 campground) It has one good hills (for Michigan anyways) and skirts by the river a lot. It eventually hooks up with the fife lake loop.
