I took a 20 degree down sleeping bag and cut the hood and the bottom off and made an underguilt for my hammock. I can cinch the bottom and still use it as a quilt on the ground too. I have another 20* bag I use as a top quilt. I just went out and hung the hammock with the new underquilt. It is 14 outside now with a 12 mph wind that makes it feel like 0. I did not sleep but lay in the hammock for quite awhile. The wind blew pretty good a cpl times. I was comfortable and could have slept in those conditions. This now frees up one of the down throws I had for underquilts to use as a topquilt. This will give me a 35-40* topquilt and underquilt plus a 15-20* TQ & UQ that can be combined to handle zero or lower. The combination of all 4 would weigh about 6 pounds, not bad to get below zero. The sleeping bags cost me $75 each and the throws cost $20. each. I started to put a hole in the bottom to run the hammock through but it started to rip so I just cut the whole circle on the bottom off, making a straight edge on the bottom. I sewed channels on the top and bottom for shock cord as well as loops for cord to hang it by.
I did not use my sock or tarp with doors which would have cut the wind and been warmer. Sorry no pics at this time got too much going on. Maybe in a month or so.
I am just happy this works as well as it did. I had the bag for about a year before I could take the scissors to it.
