I would be more worried about feral pigs down here. I have had them go right through camps. You probably had either a deer or a raccoon taking a sniff.

If you were anywhere near me then I would say it is certainly a deer. They seem to be attracted to my hammock for some reason. There has been a deer pretty close by just looking at me maybe 7 or 8 times now when I have woken up in the morning. Dunno what their problem is but they've gave me a little fright a couple of times, especially when I was out with my little sister one night and was already worried about her, I counted 4 of them within 30 feet of us. I've never felt any touch me but I have found footprints within inches of my hammock.
Bear Burrito!!
I wonder if that story is true, pretty messed up.

I guess I must be a pretty sound sleeper. Woke up one morning in the Pine Barrens and there were so many fresh deer tracks around my hammock it looked like a whole herd had been on top of me.

I had a bear sniff and snort me a few years back while hammocking in the Adks. A few choice expletives and she ran away. The next am, I found out what drew her in was the empty snickers bar wrapper in my jacket pocket which was being used as a pillow.
Wasn't there a post about a buffalo getting into a kids hammock? Maybe someone could find it.
yikes!!!!
I'll have to work up my courage again before the next camping trip. Wish I hadn't read this thread. (just kidding)
It will be in the back of my mind though!
I've woken up to deer feet from my hammock a few times. Same with elk. I never noticed one sniffing me before though lol. I always sleep with my headlamp at easy access so I can check anything out at night or see when I need to get up.
