    Exclamation Open ended Whoopie slings

Heres one for the Gram weenies among us (me being one)
Im in the process of making some "poop Hammocks" as i call them.
Thanks goes out to HikingDad for the DIY video for these, excellent idea.

And i got to thinking about the suspension setup for it.
I dont want to be taking an extra set of tree huggers, whoopies and 2 extra carabiners just incase i need to go poopie while out.
So i pondered for a while and came up with the open ended whoopie sling.
Basically it cuts out the need for the extra tree straps and carabiners.

Its hard to describe without pics but it has a spliced loop(for a larkshead) with a 1m tail for attachment to the hammock,
then a spliced Dutchware whoopie hook or DutchBiner with a 2m tail on the end.
Then the tails from both lenghts are pulled through just like a whoopie sling so you get adjustable suspension.......

The 2m length with hook goes around the tree and clips to itself then the tail/splice hangs down and connects to the Poop Hammock and Voila................The POOPIE Sling........lol

Its frigging genius..........honestly i amaze myself sometimes.

I will post pics when i next get out.
Its a fine line between a cuddle........
and holding her down so she cant get away.

    Open ended Whoopie slings

Say what? It's early in the morning and I either need pics or a cup of coffee, maybe both.

The problem is, that it offers no protection for the tree, as in no straps. Tree straps aren't a means to connect a whoopie sling to the tree, they are protection for the tree. I'm trying not to sound too "preachy" but it's not working. And wouldn't a gram weenie not carry a dedicated poop hammock in the first place?
    Good luck,

Its not meant as a permanent or long term thing so the tree wont get damaged.
Sling it, poop, then take it down again.
Ok so maybe the gram weenies wont carry one but im more of a comfort gram weenie.
I want to have all the comfortable gear i like but at the lowest weight possible.

[QUOTE=newfieghost;1210756]I do not think the duration of the hang damages the trees as much as the forces applied on a small area. For going a tree strap for a minute or hour is no excuse.

so do you use tree straps for tarp lines, or gear hanging, or bear bags........... i dont think anyone does.
Its not going to cause any damage using it for 5 mins compared to hanging kit or taught tarp line for hours on end.

I don't use straps for things with little weight or force. The reason for a strap is to spread the force over a greater area and not crush the bark and putter layer of the tree. With my weight in a hammock and 1 to 2 inch straps the force (psi) on the tree is less most likely similar to my tarp force without straps. Once you crush that layer it is crushed and well take time to heal or recover. The duration of the crush is less important the the fact that it is crushed. The more weight the larger an area/strap should be used. Time would be secondary . it might be like saying I only hit the tree with an Axe for a second. Once I hit the tree it has been hit. I'm not saying not to do it just don't think because it is just for a short time it is any better.

sorry but i dont see the problem with using one for a small amount of time, trees are hard and resilient thing, the have to be to survive what they go through on a daily basis.
Using a whoopie sling on its own isnt going to cause any damage to a tree.
unless you hanging a truck off it.......

Yeah I don't but into the whole tree damage thing to the degree others do around here. I use them for my hammock so as not to give hammocks a bad rap with the parks and what not. Let's see some pics! Oh yeah, welcome to the forums from your sister city Kettering Ohio!

I have a few trees in my back yard that I have been testing my hammock gear on. The only damage I have noted was from a short hang where I poorly set up my hammock without straps. Well the tree recover? Certainly but it was only set HP long enough to sit in and see that it would not work and was uncomfortable.
