I know this is an older thread, but having spent my second night in my new hammeck, I'd definitely recommend that over an ENO for sleeping. I'm 5'8", and I still like my ENO for lounging, but even when I get a fairly straight lie, I don't stay comfortable for as long, and my ankle seems to twist from getting pulled in by the fabric. That's ok for a little while, but it gets more annoying as time goes on.
You can get a camo hammeck with whoopies and straps shipped to you for $50, and that gets you in to a "full length" camping hammock. I asked for an 11' model with a black bishop style bag and triple stitched channels, and they made it for me with no up charge! That's a lot of bang for your buck, and you'd be supporting an American manufacturer. Very satisfied customer here. I'll be ordering one of their "netty" models soon!
I would recommend buying a used hammock. Either dream-hammock or wb. You can get a blackbird or a darien under 200 and both are great first time hammocks. I would def recommend spending the extra money over an eno hammock.
After some 45 years of experimentation, I am very happy with the rig I have accumulated. It is comfortable well below freezing and it is bomb-proof weather protection.
It's not cheap at $600, but I think it approaches ideal. The magic is the integrated bivvy-bag-pad. I have not been happy with underquilts.
- Taffeta hammock, double (I like to stretch out without my feet hanging over the edge) $30
- Big Agnes System sleeping bag (they have a sleeve for the pad but no wasted insulation on the underside) == $280
- Mountain Hardwear Dry-Q Bivvy (zips to sleeping bag's zipper) == $185
- Thermarest Z-Lite SOL Sleeping Pad (fits snugly inside the sleeve in the sleeping bag -- so do the self-inflating pads) == $45
- Go-Lite Silnylon poncho/tarp or Kelty Noah-9 tarp much bigger (and heavier) $60
- Mosquito net 36"x36" (I drape it over my head) == $5
Evnin mates
I be in search of a hammock system for a bug out bag/Hurricane evacuation system. I currently have a jeep five person dome tent, that I can use in me at home or car transport systems; but if'n we need to evacuate by foot I be looking for a shelter system for meself and me Lady. The best option, n one that fits our piratical n laid back lifestyle, be a Hammock system that is portable by foot. The only problem is we would prefer not to need 2 hammocks wit limited attaching locations (limited number of trees).With the "double person hammocks" only being a max width of 6 1/2 feet; that would be very cramped to say the least. We arrr looking for Hammock, bug bag system and rain tarp.
We arrr spyin upon the trek light double, trek light bug free hammock shield, n warbirds mamba jamba
Hello all! Long time lurker and I'm ready to make the plunge. This is a great thread with all the cost levels of gear. What I haven't seen is this.
If money were not a factor- what would be your dream system. Basically what do you all think is the best of the best in hammocks, tarps, netting etc.
Loaded question around here.what would be your dream system
