Hi folks. Looking forward to reading up on others' posts on hanging. I've replied to a couple already, one on their ride over the GAP/C&O Trail by bicycle, and a reply to a purchase from Hammock Gear quilt.
I fell in love with hammocking last spring, when a minimalist introduced me to it. Anything to lessen my pack is fine with me, although I seem to be a wash with weight, regardless. I use a Grand Trunk, and just purchased my first big priced article, yesterday, from Hammock Gear, of the Incubator 0. From my dear home town of Lancaster! It is not just because he is from my home town, but also because I've read up on some reviews, and prices/bang for bucks and Adam's product won out. Also, because Adam gave me a coupon, I decided to purchase the Zero instead of the 20. I push the limits on winter camping, for temperatures, and have tent camped at 4 degrees/ made igloo and hybrid picloo (picnic table/igloo) at 7 degrees...I am looking forward to zero degrees in hammock, sometime.
I think backpacking and bicycle camping are tied for my first loves, and the hammock adds a very new dimension to my experiences. I took my hammock on a motorcycle trip up into Baxter State Park, last year, from Central Ohio, for backpacking, only to be washed out of the back country hikes due to heavy rains and a consensus of the other 3 who desired not to hike. Objectives were met, though, in climbing Mt Katahdin's Knife Edge, 10 mile hike on Acadia Nat'l Park ridge, then Mt Washington, met with some great nights hanging to/from Maine.
My big plan this year was to ride bicycle around Lake Superior, but fell through, as my wife and I will be going to Israel!!!!! AWESOME!!! So, in place of Lake Superior, I am riding from NE Corner of Ohio State Line to SW Corner of Ohio State Line, 4-5 nights of hanging. I hope to stealth camp along the way, where ever possible. Hoping to do Superior next year.
