    Welded Rings?

    Hey,

I just finished my first Bridge Hammock (GrizzlyAdams version) and I realized that I used welded rings for the four end straps. They are 1" OD Welded nickel rings that are rated at 100lbs, with this tubing http://www.sailrite.com/Webbing-Tubu...category=51546. Do you think that the rings will be okay, or will they break. I've heard of these SMC Descender rings and seen them used on a lot of the hammocks in these forums.

I am also going to use 2 of the rings as "Ring buckle supports" for my suspension, and the same tubing for the main line of the triangle. I'm also planning on using my hiking poles as spreader bar, unless I'm persuaded another way.

    Thank you so much!

They will probably do but I would change them out just for safety.

I have been using those on my hammocks since I first found out about the ring/buckle suspension. I am still using my first set that I bought about 2 years ago and haven't had any problems with them yet. They are still holding strong.

Descending rings work well on my hh ulbp plus save a few ounces.

I got some 2" diameter rings today at home depot. They were $1.79 for a pair. The packaging lawyers say "not to support human weight" but the specs say they hold 200lbs each.

Being made of steel they are pretty heavy and will be replaced soon. They are not welded; but, should do fine for car camping hammocks(due to their weight).

I stopped by my local REI and other sporting goods stores that sell the SMC rings.. they were all out. So, I have 4 on order.. although.. I should have got 8 since I'm wanting to sew up my first hammock.

Converted my ENO to rings and.. well... It's awesome. BTW - Thanks Grizz for the video on that.

I would not trust unwelded rings. I have pulled non-welded rings out of shape before. Bad news. I am no lightweight but the non-welded rings are not trustworthy in my mind.

    however... HYOH
I may be slow... But I sure am gimpy.

Lowe's Hardware has 1" welded steel rings rated for 200 lbs. Been using these and I about meet the weight limit. They come loose in a bin so you can inspect them before buying. Every now and then one won't be welded.

Had a welded ring (Lowes or Home Depot) bust one night when Genuine Draft and I were sleeping double. Left a very sharp edge that went on to rip a huge gash down the center of some Strapworks webbing. It was a controlled decent so nobody was hurt, but it made one hell of a loud 'pop' and ruined a set of webbing.

I no longer trust or use the hardware store rings. Besides, it's not like the SMC rings are expensive. The only problem with them is they are hard to find in a store, so online ordering and waiting is the best option.

On my diy home hammock, I used two rings from a useless horse halter as end points for a variation of the "truckers hitch" suspension. They appear to be seamless bronze/brass and have tolerated the stress so far of me sleeping in the hammock for about two weeks. No sign of failure fatigue. Probably doesn't help with your question, but I'm thinking the brass ones, not made for this stress hold up, maybe the welded ones in steel would also. Only reason I didn't get quality rings was impatience. They are on my short list now though. I'm just using these on a temp basis.

Good to know about the hardware store rings. I wasn't too sold on their quality; but, I was glad to try out rings in the backyard.

I have some SMC's on order and they should be here later this week.
