I have heard that as a quilt has a warmer rating, the packability of synthetic becomes closer to down. is this true for a 20* and 30* UQ? can someone put up pics of the sizes for 20,30,40 full length and 3/4 length or 2/3 length?
Seen the spreadsheets for quilt comparisons, but really doesn't help without actually seeing the quilts. there any links to a photo comparison on quilts packed unpacked?
might be handy......
Out of curiosity do you have your pack already and want to make sure you have room or are you weighing the cost/size ratio?

Cost ratio. I am a warm sleeper trying to lighten my backpack for 3 season hiking.
Sorry, unable to post pics to assist right now but not one of my equivalently rated synthetic quilts or sleeping bags packs down nearly as small as its down counterpart. This applies to all the items I own, ranging from 0F through 40F.

is there much difference in pack size for 20* to 30* full length UQ?
how big for 20* 3/4 and 2/3 lengths? half a Nalgene bottle size?(as reference)
My friends 40*F synthetic bag packs to about the same size as my 20*F 550 down bag, fwiw. 850 would pack even smaller.
I was amazed when I got my first down bag. I had thought I had a synthetic bag that packed small, but that down bag amazed me. At the same temperature ratings, I've never seen a synthetic that packs as small as down.
Down packs alot smaller, and is much lighter than synthetic. Another big factor for me is longevity--a properly cared for down bag will last many, many years---------in my experience, synthetics lose loft with age. (down is a long term investment!)
FYI: If you want to know what type a certain bear is, sneak up behind it and kick it. Then,
run like crazy and climb up a tree. If the bear climbs the tree and eats you, it's a black
bear. If the bear just pushes the tree over and eats you, it's a grizzly bear : )

The reasons for going synthetic are not size. While the margin varies price, moisture resistance, and the effects of a torn shell all favor synthetics. Packability or compressibility is not even close. Weights can get in the same ballpark.

Dont forget that its much easier to DIY a synthetic quilt than a down one! (I made a Rayway synthetic quilt as one of my first DIY projects--its worn out, and doesnt have much loft left in it after 7 years of hard use, but I still use it around the house all the time-- one of Ray Jardines points in using synthetics was that they are so simple to make, and relatively affordable, that he could make a new one before every big thru hike . I love my down quilts, but I have to admit, its really nice to just throw the synthetic quilt in the wash and then let it dry --its not the big deal that washing down usually ends up being!)
