    Constrition knot question for Suspension

    Hello everyone. Noobie here.

I have been using a larks head knot to connect my endless loop to my hammock and then using a strap/rings to the connect to the tree.

My question is about the larks head knot. Mine has a tendency to loosed up while in storage and transport. I would like to use something that will stay tight and not ride up on my wipping. I was considering a constriction knot that I know will stay tight and will not move.

Anyone use this knot or know a reason why I should not?

    Thanks,

    Chris

What type of cord are you using?

Something i did once resulted in a very tight connection. I put the fixed eye part of my whoopie through the channel of my hammock and then rather than feed the rest of the whoopie through the fixed eye to create the larks head i used the fixed eye to create a larks head around the end of the whoopie coming out of the other side of the channel. Once it as loaded it tightened down a lot and was very difficult to get off when i needed to.

Essentially i larks headed around the cord itself rather than the hammock.

Here is the best picture i could do right now.

As a report and to give this thread some closer. I tried it and landed firmly on my butt.

After looking things over it was obvious why this knot is a no go. A larks head continues to tighten and is held tight by the load placed on the hammock. The constriction knot while a good knot for many things remains as tight as you make it while tying the knot. The load on the hammock does not increase its tautness. So when I loaded the hammock with myself the fabric simply slipped out and down came Chris butt first.

    Thanks,

    Chris

I didn't see that one coming, but it seems so obvious now. Thanks for the follow up.

So, if you are back to the Lark's Head, Maybe some whipping on the cord to keep the lark's head in place. Or even a cord lock...

Yeah, now that i see your report like gmcttr said, it is obvious, I had mine run through the channel of the hammock so that would be why i did not have the same problem as you. I am sorry for the bad advice man...

Yup, the constrictor knot tightens as whatever it's around tries to expand or move -- not as tension is put on the line.

Here's an old silent movie showing the absolute best way to attach your line to a hammock. This is all I use and it's foolproof -- no way it can slip.

Could a constrictor knot tied in-the-bight work? You could tie this in a portion of a continuous loop and slip it over your hammock. Once tightened around something a constrictor knot is supposed to be particularly resistant to loosening. I don't know if loading from the ends is an anticipated use of the knot, though. Does anyone else know?
