    Opinion on a fabric

I asked this on the fabric thread, but I don't think there is much traffic in there!

I picked up some static free lining that's 100% polyester. Would this work for a hammock or better suited to something non structural? Or maybe a double layer hammock?

I'm a big guy but need to make one for my 15 yo son also.

    Thanks
    Terry

Just to give you a little info on this I weighed one at 485 gm for almost 8 yards!

Give us the length and width along with the weight and we can start to guess as to what it may be suited for. Thanks

    A quick experiment:
With scissors, snip through the selvage (edge) near one end of your fabric piece.
Then see if you can tear a strip of fabric off the main piece.
Or, tear a strip lengthwise along the grain of the fabric, again starting with a short scissor cut.
Ideally, you could compare to nylon ripstop, if you have any scraps around.
With non-ripstop fabric, I'd be concerned using stuff that wasn't pretty tough.

Try the tear test that Victoria Guy posted. A pic would help as well BUT if it's what I think it is that you're describing then 100% polyester lining is good for one thing - lining!!

It's not meant to be under stress. I can remember skirts lined with polyester lining and having it shred at the seams under the stress of me sitting down after a winter of 'comfort foods' and too little exercise. Yes, I'm old and no, I don't wear skirts in an office anymore...

Personally, I wouldn't even use it for stuff sacks cause I tend to fill them to the limit.

Ok! Tear test was a big eye opener! Thanks for everybody's help!!!
I didn't spend much on it so I'll just set it aside and use it for a snake skin if something like that!
