I seem to recall an attempt at making a hammock with as little fabric as possible, using the same idea of clews but asymmetrically set up......? that is a neat idea though Might be useful to "extend" my 103" hammock... (8ft 7 inches)

EDIT: related question, from the looks of how the rope keeps the clews from coming out, could the same thing be achieved using a bar of some sort, between the fabric grommets/holes? might make for a very simple cleaning job and might also make for a multi-purpose hammock, IE, clewed naval style, clewed spreader bar, standard gathered end...
