    Hammock Conversion process working....

I'm an Assistant Scoutmaster. Have been hammocking with the Troop for 2 1/2 yrs now. The conversion of the troop is starting..... I've been the only hanger, adults and scouts. I converted my oldest son last year. My youngest son was converted by my oldest son this past weekend. On our upcoming backpacking trip to the Cheaha wilderness, we will have 5 hangers. Me and my two sons, and two other boys. Next challenge will be selecting camping sites with enough trees.

I was the first in our troop to start hammock camping last August, and now we have three boys (about a quarter of our troop), and one other adult, that are into hammock camping. I imagine that after a few more campouts we'll have some more scouts interested in hanging.

Thats great!!! I'm an ASM also. We have one or two others that hang on and off. I have officially given up the ground, so I am going to try to convert some more of the leaders. My son has just started in scouts, so I think he needs a little ground time so that when I convince him to switch he'll truly appreciate it :-)

No problem with trees in Cheaha!

If you are not familiar with the area, just SE of the Turnipseed campground, ~ 200 yards, up the Chinabee Silent Trail, cross the boundary into the Nat'l Forest, is a great area next to a flowing stream for a large group. Or, see the thread on 2nd annual Cheaha hang for a place W of Turnipseed that is also good. Another great spot is at the intersection of the Pinhoti and Chinnabee Silent Trail on the top of the ridge (scouts will love the challenge of hiking up to the ridge, Scoutmasters will cuss the hike up to the ridge...).

I have a few other leaders intrigued by the idea of hammocking, but they are still comfortable enough on the ground. I still go to ground when conditions require (no trees), but I'm about to make a turtlelady stand.

Our plan is to start at Adam's Gap, and camp up once we get past the rock garden. Haven't been there, but I know the map fairly well.

If you ever take the boys east of P'cola, there are plenty of places in the Blackwater forest area that aren't too far away...

The PLC wanted to hike in mountains......

I do agree that we need to branch out to backpack in the Blackwater area. We do camp there, just not backpack camp.
