Anyone ever tried to paint a logo on silnylon?

I am a Boy Scout varsity coach (14-15 year old boys). I have about 8 boy out of twelve that have finished everything but their eagle projects and the are getting lazy and distracted. I think I am going to offer a homemade hammock tarp and possibly underquilt to the first one who finishes.

I would like to paint with a stencil an eagle logo with our team number on the side of the sil tarp. Has anyone tried a logo on this stuff? Would a silicone base paint adhere ok? Is there anything that wouldn't flake or peel off after a few stuffs?

you might want to work with the boys to develop, and use the "SILK SCREENING" process(¿ another merit badge ?)

there are screen stencil products that develop with simple/old fashioned FLASH BULBS, that have a life of about 50 prints

one of them, i used with my middle school students w/ excellent results, comes in kit form

PRINT GOCCO, is the name and here is some information about the system

    http://www.savegocco.com/what-is-gocco/

there are many sources, just do a search, or have the kids do the search

the detail that can be attained is much better than common stenciling

good luck to you & the kids

I would think you would have a hard time silkscreening a non-absorbent material like silnylon.

I've thought about this a bit and decided the best way would be to construct a logo panel / flag and stitch it to the tarp and seam seal the connection points. You could easily silkscreen the logo / flag material for a nice look

I've thought about the silk screen idea. I may look more into it. I was just curious if anyone has tried in the past.

what process do you think is used on rain suits?

you are correct in your thinking about non-absorbant, when your train of thought is in line w/ t-shirts, proper

this stuff just adheres to the surface

    Nope.
You can do a seperate patch or sew on a panel of untreated nylon with a logo.

Silnylon is non absorbent. Paint, markers, dyes are only temporary on sil. All will flake, peel, or fade away in time.

How about a colored silicone? Something like this? (I really don't know.)

May not be worth my time, but if I somehow created the logo on regular ripstop and then tried to ad the silicone later, do you think the solvent That caries the silicone would desolve anything already on the ripstop?

Silkscreening the nylon first and then coating would probably work. I assume this is how the camo silnylon is created. I've read the posts here on creating silnylon but I wouldn't trust myself to do a good job.

One other option might be to investigate a heat transfer type logo. Not sure what the boundaries are on heating silnylon or how the transfer might handle the stuffing / unstuffing of the tarp.
