Lightbulb Free Advice To the New Guys

So, here's your chance. Say you are talking to a new Hanger, what would your first piece of wisdom be? Would it be suspension upgrades, a certain kind of pad, longer straps, or any number of other possibilities. It could be upgrades under $100, or $200 etc. What would your guidance be?

#1 get yourself a copy of The Ultimate Hang

#2 sit down, read the whole thing, then read on here for a week, then everything you can absorb from ALL of the vendors sites. Then hit Youtube focusing on the videos from the vendors and EXPERIENCED hangers.

#3 get your gear and spend as much time as possible testing, re-testing and then re-testing again. (getting your butt to a hang will help a lot to....much better to see and touch and feel the gear in person than just read and guess at what will work best for you.)

#4 Realize that not all (most) of what you read applies to you, your gear or preferences. Realize that not everything you have read and seen is put out there by experienced folks (not that they don't know but that there is a solid learning curve that can only be smoothed out by your own experience.) So get off the computer, put the phone down and go hang and test, then re-test and re-test and re-test your gear.

Assuming I wasn't talking to a new hanger at a group hang, I would tell them the single best thing they can do is attend a group hang.

As far as equipment advice, I would tell them the underquilt is the most important piece of gear affecting their comfort (and safety).

    1. Get yourself a reliable tarp - single most important piece of gear.
    2. Tablecloth hammock - you can't hammock hang without a hammock and it's the cheapest hammock there is. Get yourself off the ground and go from there.
    3. Underquilt - takes hammock camping from a novelty to true joy!

Learn to hang your hammock so you are comfortable overnight and can set it up even if trees are not perfectly spaced.
Then on to all the rest.

    Everything this guy said. /\

Hang that hammock and hit the woods as much as possible. Experience has no substitute.

All of the above, plus "don't hang any higher than you're willing to fall."
Keep movin', keep believing and enjoy the journey!
