    amsteel decender rings?

This may be the dumbest question. I just placed an order with DIYGear supply (with fantastic customer service) and bought two of the decender rings. It got me thinking, could you make two continous loops out of 1/8 amsteel and run a strap through them like you would decender rings with a slipper half hitch on the strap and hang with that? Basically substitute the decenders with two continous loops. Would love to hear everyone's opnion.

I don't think so, lack of rigidity to bite the strap would concern me. A low altitude experiment may answer the question. Very low.

With a safe bury of at least 4 inches, it's hard to make a continuous loop comparable in diameter to a ring.

Nope...just tried it to confirm my suspicions. The rigidity of metal rings holds their shape and keeps them in the proper orientation. With soft loops, they immediately deform and bypass each other the moment the least bit of tension is placed on the webbing and the strap pulls through as if is was not connected at all.

Another thing to keep in mind as you experiment with amsteel is that it starts to loose strength at only 150*, so a strap or line ripping over a loop or eye could easily heat it to the point that would cause loss of strength.

Sheech - how sleepy was I when I typed that - l here's another try. Moderator, feel free to delete the above typo filled copy of this post.

Climbers use descending rings instead of just running their rope though a nylon loop because of the tremendous heat generated as the rope is pulled through the loop when retrieved. Of course you are not pulling 50M length of line through your soft shackle or continuous loop but I would avoid a configuration that puts two lines together, under tension, where movement/friction is probable. I usually put something meta, like a biner, between two lines or tie them so they don't rub.
