I've always wanted to camp at Roan Mtn. Fellow hammockers would be great!

Roan Mtn. is on my wish list and this just might be the time to do it. I think I can do at least a mile hike even on the AT. Thanks MM.

Planning to make this one MM. Just have to convince the woman to take care of our son's dog for a few days. He deploys early May for 9 months, so we get to baby sit for a while.

I have been on Roan Mt in the winter during a blizzard, never during warm weather. Will have to see what my calendar has going then.

A couple of summers ago I was on the AT in GA during 4th July and it was close to 100 degrees and it kicked my butt.

Bumping this in the hope that someone who has actually been there will write. Its on the AT, and I believe the hike from Carvers Gap is not too bad - not sure about 5yr olds, though, and not sure how cold it gets there in July. Personally, I'm hoping for 40s.

As best I remember, the first part of the trail from Carver's is an old road with steady grade. Don't remember much about the last piece up to the shelter. Medicine Man can give you a better description. Send him a PM.

There is a big parking lot where the old Cloudland Hotel was. From the parking lot is approx. 1/2 mile to the shelter

    https://maps.google.com/maps?ll=36.1...hl=en&t=m&z=12

Directions: Take Route 19E to the town of Roan Mountain, turn onto Route 143 and travel 12.8 miles to the TN/NC state line (Carver's Gap). On your way up the mountain, you'll pass through the Roan Mountain State Park. Eventually, you leave the state park and enter the national forest. Option 1: Park at Carver's Gap and take the AT approx. 1.5 miles up (heading south on the AT, away from the Balds) -- or (Option 2) turn right at Carver's Gap and continue driving to the Old Cloudland Hotel Site (this road is closed during the winter months). Park at the end of the lot nearest the bathrooms, climb the stairs and venture to your left. You'll soon run into the AT. Turn right to hike north on the AT (toward the balds) for a short distance (approx. 1/2 mile) -- on the way you'll pass by an old chimney. The shelter is located one tenth of a mile off the AT on well-marked, blue-blazed trail.
