R-Value = 1? I have been freezing on an air-pad with an r-value of 3 - indoors! Or are you supposed to fill it with some kind of insulation?

The self inflating pads are filled with open cell foam. Many companies sell these.
After you open the valve, air enters the pad as the foam swells. Once the pad is filled to your desired loft, you close the valve and seal in the air. Adjust loft by adding or releasing air via the valve. Inflated pads do not need much air to work well in a hammock.

The foam allows the pad retain much more heat, as it reduces air circulation within the mat. The standard "air only" pad/matress will not retain much (if any) heat due to air movement within the matress. Convection.

That's exactly why I vote for the instaflator. For 4 bucks, little pack space, and 1.7 oz, you get the mechanics that let you do this to whatever thing you have to inflate. We have two different types of primaloft insulated mats, a bunch of inner tubes, and a Sea Eagle inflatable kayak (we live right off the delaware).

I think the inflation of this mat is genius, but that doesn't necessarily mean this is the mat I want to sleep on for the night.

This is completely true, but it seems that the trend is getting away from self inflating mats as primaloft, and other light and packable insulators, are becoming more popular. What I am seeing, (and I am no expert) is more manual inflating, insulated mats. The reason being is they are lighter, more compressible, and are quite a bit thicker (Let's not forget that there are a lot of campers still on the ground. I even get forced there at times )

Instaflator has been around for a while. Sometimes can come pretty cheap. Other times ridiculously priced. Usually carried in pool supply stores.

Instaflator is what I want for $4 but postage to me in the UK is $25+ on top! If only Dutch stocked it with his (fair) international postage!

    Thermarest has something sorta similar.
I have an xtherm. It comes with a pump sac for a stuff sac.

The one it comes with is like this one but narrower and longer.
