Smile VIDEO: First Hang and Some Serious Wind

http://youtu.be/c1IRxTB6vtY - Link to video on YouTube.

Had a good time out in some nasty conditions. Pretty steady, strong wind all night. Every now and then it would be calm, then a freight train of wind would nail me. Could hear the trees creaking and moving all night. Very glad none fell on me. Not the warmest welcome to hammocking from mother nature, but i'll take it.

How did the 20' uq do for you in those cold temps. Looks like you had a BA long ranger bag. How did that work for ya.

The Phoenix 20 with 1oz overstuff did fine. Problem was the wind. I would feel comfortable then a gust of wind would hit me and give me a chill underneath. I would slowly get warm again and the wind would hit, causing another chill. Basically as if someone was saying "Hey, your starting to get warm, let me hit this re-set button and make it cold again."

Makes we want an underquilt protector. I would defintely use the same quilt in the same conditions if I had more wind protection.

The bag was actually a North Face Blue Kazoo 15 degree, long. Plenty warm for most of the night. Put on my R1 top around 4am. I was a definitely not as warm as I would like the last few hours.

    Hi Fishwater,
I really enjoyed watching your Trip Report video thanks so much for taking the time to bring us along.
Excellent shooting and editing just the right balance of the trail, general area, gear, and camp chores.
I solo a lot and completely understand the lure of peace and quiet.
Congrats on the Freshies (first tracks into an area)
You have assembled a very nice hammock kit excellent choices of gear.
Might I suggest some cheap foam ear plugs to help with sleeping in heavy winds.
They really cut down the popping tarp noise. Be glad you weren't using cuben.
9F with heavy wind using just 15/20 degree down, man that is testing to the limits.

Again thanks, I feel like I just spent the weekend in the New England woods,
a real treat for this old Colorado boy who's never been that far North.
I've subscribed to your youtube channel and looking forward to your next TR.

Just a thought but couldn't you have tried to criss cross the tarp lines under you to bring the tarp in for a little wind brake? I have a tadpole and a HH hex. and didn't think of that until watching your video. I plan on adding doors. With the side pulls I wonder if it wouldn't work to.

Thanks O&B. I think I will toss some ear plugs into my kit. My only concern is not being alert to the presence of any dangerous animals or beings that could appear. As for pushing the limits, indeed I did! Let's just say I'm glad it was a one-nighter. And thanks for the sub. Hope to have some more fun trips once some of this snow melts. Cheers.

I actually almost added two more tie outs to each side of the tarp when I ordered it for just that reason. I'm just not sure it would work without another tie out point maybe 2-3 feet from the end. I didnt think to try it on my trip but maybe the next time it's set up I will give it a shot.
