Is that a nice way of saying, "The folks who weigh about as much as the strap rating" need to pay attention?

Makes sense in my head as well since I have been doing it this way in an attempt to reduce the possibility of slippage. Thanks to RSGary for posting this and showing me the error of my ways.

Shown here, an angle of 120 degrees or more which is basically with the eye opening on the same side as your hammock equals 100% of rating. But if you move the eye to the side of the tree to the 30* angle you reduce the rating by 50%. In other words, a tree strap rated at 500 lbs will only be rated for 250lbs with the eye on the side of the tree.

Based on information in this thread, videos I've watched and the Osha page linked above... You want your loop that passed through the other loop at no less than 121 degrees, based on the measurements in the diagram. From the table on the Osha page. Choke angle >120 degrees = 100% rated capacity, 90-120 = 87%, 60-89 = 74%, 30-59 = 62%, 0-29 = 49%.

DIY from someone on here. I don't really know much about what I bought, but I'm sure it's real nice. I'm gonna look, dissect and learn from this one.

so is that saying if you have say the 30 degree angle, your rated capacity is down to 49 percent? So if it is rated at 1000 pounds at say 120 degree, then if you have it doubled back at say 30 degrees, it is at 490 pounds to break?
