    Okay - but what happens if you go wider than 120 degrees? i figured coming off on the side - like 180 degrees - would somehow add the most friction. But my main concern is when I use a carabiner. I want the "pull" to be along the correct axis of the biner - not trying to bend it sideways.

    Follow the example in the original post for safety. You will have more than enough friction in the tree and you will still be loading the biner properly.

    Thanks for the tip. I used to always use my straps with a sharp degree and recently changed to a more open position. This info-graphic helps me realize what was happening.

    All sorts of factors like choking the tree or taking a couple of wraps around it, can reduce or increase the safe working load as well as angle of sling.
