my mother and i just did the whole trip from downtown pittsburgh to DC in october. from pittsburgh to cumberland, we stayed in the following cities (just reverse the order) connellsville, confluence, and meyersdale. we camped in both connellsville and confluence but stayed in a B&B in meyersdale. we did short milage trips because we liked stopping to sight see and look around. and that climb from frostburg to the continental divide, good luck. i was happier than flies on poo when i realized i was going TO dc on that hill so i literally didnt pedal for like 20 minutes. we coasted past cumberland.

As far as bikes go. I've ridden that trail many times in the rain on an endurance race called crush the commonwealth. Use a minimum of 28mm tires, they fit most any bike. I use my carbon road bike without issue.
