    First overnight hang

Wish me luck!! My UQ and TQ haven't arrived yet but I'm tired of just looking at my new WB XLC and superfly so I've decided tonite is the night.

I added a thermarest and am using a 0 degree synthetic unzipped as a top quilt.

In place of an UQ I took a old ENO hammock and hung it under my WB and layered a couple of sleeping bags in it and cinched it up as close to my WB as I could get. I have no idea if that will work but I'm about to find out.

Temp right now is 60 but low tonite is 30 with wind chill of 21 and 15mph winds expected. Luckily I'm 3 feet from the back door if this little experiment doesn't work.

I'll report back in the morning (assuming I can still feel my fingers to type)

    Best of luck.

I must be braver than you. I test 5' from the back door.

Well 3 feet from the back door makes me 20 feet from the bar where my scotch lives, so technically I must be braver!! :-)

    Here's the report.
Went to bed about 11 and it was pushing 30 degrees. I was wearing wool pants and top and an Underarmour hoodie. I also had on wool socks and a wool hat. Fell asleep immediately and didn't wake up until about 2 am. I'm not sure if it was the cold or the need to pee, but I got up and took care of one of them. Once I laid back down I realized my feet and legs were toasty warm, but it was my shoulders and upper body that felt like I was laying on ice. The thermarest in the XLC had shifted so it was covering my legs, but since I was at an angle, my upper half was not protected.

I fixed that little issue, and also lowered the head of the hammock a couple more inches and fell back to sleep. Around 4 am I awoke to cold shoulders again and realized my makeshift UQ had shifted from under the WB and wasn't providing any protection. That was a quick fix and I was quickly asleep again.

At 10:30, my wife decided to see if I was still breathing and came out to wake me up. I was out like a light, and didn't realize how light it was outside, as my wool cap had come down over my eyes.

All in all, I'd say it was a successful test. My real UQ and TQ arrive next monday, and I think that will solve any cold issues in the future. I woke us a little stiff (nothing compared to ground camping) but I still have some adjustments to do with the hang angles to find the perfect flat spot and I think that will solve that problem.

I'm thrilled with the WB and the fact that even with my thrown together UQ and TQ I was able to sleep (mostly) through the night in 21 degree weather.

Can't wait to test it out for real when we go camping at the end of this month. Hopefully I can get another chilly night before then to test out the new TQ and UQ before we go camping.

Great Report Goowa. Makes me more excited to get mine. Good luck with the quilts man and hope your camping goes well at the end of the month. I'm trying to go after the first week in April, if the gear shows up.

    Cheers
