    Major weight savings

I just made 2 amsteel loop shackles (or nacrabiners or whatever you call them) and they only weigh 5 grams (about .1 oz) and my lightest 2 climbing carabiners weighed 2.1 ounces. That's a pretty good weight savings!

I already switched to whoopie slings on my main hammock, but I still like the convenient adjustability of straps for my backup hammock.

By the way, is there a knot equivalent to replace aluminum descending rings? (That would save another 4 ounces!).

    I quite like these

Is this just a loop with a sheath of cord over it, or is that some kind of fancy splice-work involved?
The O ring and string looks like a handy addition to aid the quick release/ keeping the loop tight.

Btw these are Softies XL for large boats
    (nice photo on that site)
4”(102mm) Internal Diameter, 8,000 lbs SWL, 1.8 oz (51 grams)

6”(152mm) Internal Diameter, 18,400 lbs SWL, 5.9 oz (169 grams)

yours for $89.00,$119.00 and $159.00 respectively

Would a large bead be better than a large stopper knot?

Think I found the answer to my own question with this Italian blog (series of photos, easy to follow)

The reason I was interested in whether that was a separate sheath was twofold, potentially simpler construction and the sheath helping to reduce a cheesewire effect. That will still be there with the method shown in the above link though.

I'm dying for the dynema I've ordered to turn up so I can start playing with these things (and whoopies). I'm spending an unhealthy amount of time learning new knots* and reading up as much as I can. I did come across a mention of a knot recomended as a stopper when using dynema, the stevedore knot. Whilst not as satisfying as the lanyard knot, it's easier to tie and might be easier to keep the balance that's needed. Tying it with two strands should hopefully be a big enough stopper.

I'm also liking the simplified versions of these shackles/biners such as Lonetrackers one with the nail knot.

*diamond/lanyard, Chinese button (with some loop variations), stevedore, zeppelin - add to that a job today balloon modelling and my fingers are killing me.

I listened and listened, and I think that the sound is something off camera. It sounds like a boot scuffle to me, not the object in question.

Sounds like a hard knot, nothing metallic. It's loud because it's very close to the microphone and the gain is high.

    Without bury or passthrough

What would be the effect of not creating an adjustable loop with a bury or a passthrough and making the loop by larksheading the end opposite the diamond knot around the line before the knot.

It pulls tightly around the lines before the knot, but does it further degrade the overall strength of the loop shackle because of the larkshead. Is there any way this might slip over the knot?

Maybe dumb questions. I've made several of these from the instructions given in this thread and they appear to be very handy. The larkshead seems easier, but may not be safe or strong enough.

Very good question. It would definitely hold...how much weight is the big question. Sounds like a good project for Schneiderlein if he can get some more time on the machine.

These would be much easier to make, and probably easier to use.
