I ended up camped on the side of a hill - and did get the snow-stakes just in time. On one side, though, I had to tie my tarp to a tree on one corner, and sorta jam the snow stake through a half-covered bush/brush thing - nothing to tie the line too, and I think I hit ground there that was frozen. Wasn't pretty, and took two attempts, but got it to stick. The other side, though, no trees or logs within 6+ ft. On the uphill slope - over a foot of fresh snow. The stake was buried completely but would pull right out as the snow was too loose. Sticking in at an angle and a couple inches under the surface seemed to work.
